When I first started doing Indian Head Massage the most common question I got was ‘What exactly is Indian Head massage?’ Some people had heard of it but didn’t really know what it involved.
I remember doing my first practice session on my husband – he was curious but skeptical. As he put it, ‘I thought you were just going to faff about with my head for a bit’. But he was in for a surprise! The treatment didn’t just focus on the head; it also included the upper back, shoulders, neck, arms, and face. Even more surprising was how much he enjoyed it and how loose his shoulders and neck felt afterward. Now, he regularly asks for a massage!

The origins of Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage is a deeply relaxing treatment that helps relieve stress and tension. It has its roots in India, where these massage techniques have been passed down through generations, traditionally practiced at home using a simple kitchen chair. The treatment is based on Ayurveda—the ancient system of medicine (where “Ayur” means life and “Veda” means knowledge). Ayurveda emphasizes balance between the body, mind, and spirit to promote overall well-being, beauty, and long life.
What to expect during your session
When you come to me for an Indian Head Massage, we’ll start with a short consultation. This helps me understand any contraindications or precautions and allows you to share any specific areas of tension or discomfort. If you have any particular concerns, this is the perfect time to let me know.
You’ll have the option to choose an oil for your massage, or if you prefer, I can perform the massage without oil over a light t-shirt. A vest top that can be pulled down over your shoulders is best if you’d like to receive the full benefit of the oil massage.

You will start in a seated position. I massage your upper back and shoulders using a variety of techniques including kneading, pettrisage and percussion movements. Some movements are gentle while others apply a deeper pressure to release any knots or tension. Next, I’ll focus on your neck to relieve any built-up stiffness before moving on to your head. The head massage includes lovely shampooing movements and gentle hair-pulling techniques, which may sound unusual but feel incredibly soothing! To complete the experience, I’ll massage your arms before transitioning you to the massage bed for a deeply relaxing face and ear massage. Clients have often nodded off at this part! If you’d rather stay seated, the entire massage can be done in that position—it’s completely up to you. The massage is deeply calming and relaxing and you will have some time afterward to remain lying down to fully absorb the benefits.
I will offer you a glass of water to help flush out any toxins released during the massage. I will also share any observations from your treatment and provide aftercare advice to help you maintain the benefits from your massage.
Experience the relaxation for yourself
